Wake!Fest 2008

We recently returned from our Annual Church Camp retreat (Wake!Fest) where we get to spend all day in the boat teaching local high schoolers to wakeboard and wakesurf. The camp, called "Wake!Fest," has been going on in some capacity for more than 22 years and this year was Greg's 22nd and my 1st. I can see why Greg has never missed it!

Spending all day on calm water at Lake Entiat with personalities of every possible type in the boat could not have been more fun. The campers signed up for the boat they wanted (of course the NWR Malibu was booked quickly)and what followed was some great times and great memories.

We saw some amazing crashes, some new tricks landed, some first timers getting stoked, and SO much more. We hope to post some photos and videos soon. The staff took care of us better than we could have imagined and in the end I can easily say that it was one of the best weeks I have ever had.

Thanks to all the campers, staff, and friends that made this such an amazing time. See you next year!

On the Road

Our skim team has taken to the road for a film trip through NW Washington and into BC Canada. They will be travelling on a 5-day long trip sessioning a bunch of skim spots getting footage for their new video. Greg is playing bus driver for the team and has sent us an update. Have a read.

-Zack-

Greetings from the road! The trip has been going delightfully so far, we spent yesterday down at the tidal flats in Bellingham and got a little bit of filming done. It's pretty nice to just be along for the ride and not have to think about anything. They've got a fairly thorough itinerary put together for the trip and it sounds like we'll be seeing quite a few different beaches in the next few days. Hanging out with these guys makes me realize how different wakeboarding is than other sports. Since only one person can ride at a time behind the boat things always seem to be in a time crunch and no matter how hard you try every wakeboard film trip seems to always have some sense of stress or urgency.

With skimboarding since everyone can spread out and take turns, and since its hard for a two inch deep tide pool to get choppy, there almost seems to be an overabundance of time. These guys are really fun to hang out with and they are pros at finding good ways to kill time. Yesterday it was super windy out and we had a contest to see who could run the furthest down the beach diving in and out of a hula hoop as it rolled down the beach. I haven't run in a long time and the hula hoop probably made it almost 3/4 of a mile down the beach. I almost didn't make it that far. Anyways, when the biggest challenge in 5 days is trying to come up with games you can play to kill time, life is pretty good.

I quickly realized yesterday how much I miss Bellingham, its awesome to see everyone cruising around town riding bikes and just enjoying the weather at a slow pace. Everyone likes sleeping in around here, so I spent my morning drinking coffee and playing around with the camera on Emile's computer. I've attached what I feel is my finest photo of the morning. I hope all is well back home, talk to you the next time I get WiFi.

Happenings

It's been a bit since our last update. We have been keeping super busy with Tour prep and getting things dialed for Fall. It is weird to think ahead that far while we are still sitting here waiting for some sunshine so we can get out on the water.

As I write this, the 2008 Summer Tour has kicked off. Brent Starr, Greg, and our buddy Chris are in Idaho for the first leg of the clinic series. Have a look at the image above for a bit of a visual recap of what we have been doing thus far. If you have not signed up for a clinic yet...head to the Tour page and grab a spot before they fill up.

-Zack-

Wed. May 14, 2008

Our clinic sign ups are now available. Head over to the Tour Page and click the registration link to reserve your spot. We will be updating the Tour Page a lot over the next few weeks so be sure and check back often.

Also...be sure and check out the Grizzly Sports events going on this weekend. We will be out on Sunday with the full setup and showing our support for the NWR skim team as they put on what should be a great demo. Come on out to Mill Creek and say "What's Up!"

Diesel Degenerates

Just wanted to write a quick apology to the gentlemen we just encountered at the Safeway gas pumps in Kenmore, WA. After waiting our turn for ten minutes or so to fill up at the ONLY diesel pump at the station while no less than four gas-engine cars cut in front of us to fill up, we pulled forward to fill our tank. I pulled forward as little as I could to still allow room at the pump in front of me, while still not blocking traffic behind me. While getting in the bus to leave, two fine specimens of humanity whipped in front of us in a pristine (please notice the sarcasm) mid-nineties econoline van. You know, the type that one might expect to find a wizard, or perhaps a desert landscape with a headshot of a wolf or bobcat delicately painted on the side. One of the neanderthals slammed his door and loudly muttered how the two morons behind him (us) had to take up two pumps (please notice that while making a scene over our “incompetence” he was in fact getting ready to fill up at the second pump). After the man stormed off, the passenger, another exemplary member of a civilized race, took the time to make us aware that that was his brother that we were speaking to and he knew what he was talking about.

We just thought that we’d take the time to apologize. So, to the large bald guy driving a van that may or may not be filled with candy and a few missing children, and his brother with great dental work wearing a pair of red sweatpants tucked into black hightops and a WSU Starter jacket, we’re sorry. You’re absolutely right, we should learn how to fit our 30 foot long bus into a 35 foot 2-pump space and still be able to leave 20 feet for a rapist-van that could be filling up at any of the other 9 pumps that serve gasoline. Sorry our numbers didn’t add up.

If you’d like to call and finish our lovely discussion (since we couldn’t hear you as you continued to shout at us as we drove away), my number is 425.220.0675. Or email me at greg@northwestriders.com. Give me your address and I’ll ship you both a free shirt. You guys are the type of customer that any company would love to have representing their brand to the masses.

Rylee Mae Sund

Family seems to be the theme of the month for our little company. One of our wake riders, Mr. Eric Sund and his lovely wife Lindsey recently welcomed their daughter Rylee Mae to the family. Rylee is their first kid and we’ve got money on her first words being ‘nose press’ or ‘back lip.’ For those of you that don’t know, Eric is the resident king of rails at the playground that is Koppert Lake. Congratulations Eric and Lindsey!

Well we did it...in a mix of Spanish/English (Spanglish?) we dubbed our adventure "Cinco Sporto Cero Ocho" and set out to cover five board sports in one day. It took us 21 hours and some mileage on the NWR Bus (yet to be officially named). Stay tuned for coverage.

You can create your own profile and communicate with others in the area. The guys that run WakeFirst were nice enough to post up a link to our site. Click the image below to visit.

Starr’s Love Shines Bright

Our old friend and team rider, Brent Starr and his lovely wife Amy recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary. Brent spends a good chunk of his summers on the Northwest Riders Tour, and we’re hoping that Amy might be able to join in on a few of our trips this summer. Congratulations to the Starrs, once they decide to add a few kids perhaps they’ll lay claim to having a new constellation named after them. We’d call it “The Mason Lake Mafia.”

We put out a press release today which you can take a look at on WakeboardNorthwest.com. It talks a bit about our last few months as a company and where we are headed.

Greg and I are working on the pages now for our Bus and our Boat. We pick the boat up mid-week so we are excited about that. Thanks again to Mark Gibbs and Malibu Boats for giving us such a great opportunity and providing us with such an amazing machine!

If you have not yet taken a look at the products page, go there now and take a gander. We are selling through pretty quickly, so order up soon to be sure and get the size and style you want while we have it in-stock. We really appreciate all of your support as we look ahead to a great season!

A New Rider Is Born

Northwest Riders is a proud grandparent (?) of the newest addition to our growing family. Our original designer from Day 1, Gabe Coyne, and his beautiful wife Jamie welcomed their healthy baby boy Ethan James Coyne into the world on Thursday February 28th. Ethan was 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 19 inches long. He seems destined to be a surfer, as he came out grabbing rail on the umbilical cord. Also noteworthy is the fact that unlike many of the undeniably ugly babies out there, Ethan is one heck of a cute kid. Congratulations Gabe and Jamie!

Alright crew...we have added some updates to the site. Sorry for the lapse in news posts, we took some R&R last week with an amazing surf trip in the new Bus. We had bluebird skies, clean waves, and a great little camp session. We couldn't have asked for a better initial run in the Bus.

We added multiple rider bios on our Team Page, so check it out. We also added some brief words on this seasons upcoming Tour. There is more to come as we finalize dates and get some photos of the Bus and our new 2008 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV. Cya soon!

Fri. Feb. 18, 2008

On the noteworthy newsfront for the day...a little bit of an interesting fact came through the NWR office today. For some time, Greg and I have known that his birthday of April 23rd and my birthday of April 24th (1-year apart) were a little number that brought Northwest Riders Clothing Company an odd little twist with us being both owners of the company and the same birth month (and nearly day). A bit later we hired on our lead designer, Trevor Kaiser. Talking to Trevor revealed that he also was born on April 23rd. This was a bit of a shock that brought us a good chuckle. Tonight, after receiving our new designer, Nomi Stirm's, bio for the site...we were treated to another crazy shock. It turns out Nomi's birthday is April 24th also. What does this little rant of mine mean? Not much really, it just made for a slightly weird, slightly scary, and very random (or not so) twist to our company.

So...if you were born on or around April 23-24 then please send us your resume. We should probably keep this little hot streak going so we have a good conversation starter next time we are out and about.

The new 2008 Northwest Riders Clothing Company web site officially launched today! We have a lot planned for this coming year and hope you all decide to take part in it. New limited clothing and gear is available now on the product pages. We have a lot more coming for the site with the Tour, Team, and other pages so be sure and check back here often. If there is anything you want to tell us or recommend, please send a comment. Thanks for the support!

We are adding on some touch ups to the NWR Tour Bus and have scheduled the decal install for the end of the week. I am working out a few more pages for the site and we will continually update it as we go. Our Tour page is being added to now and will be posted with photos, bus and boat descriptions, and eventually the schedule for the summer tour and rental rates for the bus. Stay tuned and let Greg and I know what we can do to improve the site with a quick email. Thanks for the support everyone!

Sitting here in the office plugging away on the new 2008 web site for Northwest Riders Clothing Company. We got the bus back from the mechanic and she is running like a top. 100% waste vegetable oil is our new fuel of choice...environmentally friendlier than straight diesel and gas for sure! We are installing furniture tonight and then it will be almost ready for the road. Keep checking back to the tour page for info on this season's summer tour and also to read up on the bus and the new 2008 Malibu Wakesetter LSV 23.
